Star Wars X-Wing - XWVM

SolKutTeR · 2. Juni 2025

XWVM is a facilitator app to play Star Wars X-Wing from Lucas Arts and Totally Games. We are re-implementing the executable to extend the game beyond its original hardware support. The app requires the player to own and have installation of the original X-Wing game, or have the GOG or Steam versions of X-Wing Special Edition (either the 1993 floppy, the 1994 CD, and/or 1998 Windows edition). The team of fans developing XWVM is not associated with Lucasfilm Ltd or Disney, and XWVM is not an official Star Wars product. XWVM isn't a standalone game, or total conversion, but a tool to play the original product. XWVM neither contains nor distributes any copyrighted material. All game resource files (missions, voice overs, SFX, MIDI music, in-game graphics and 3D models, etc) are loaded from the player's copy of the original game, or are replacements originally created by our team, where the original resources are considered inadequate for today's standards.

The wait is over!
It has been about a decade since the XWVM team first formed in the GOG forums, soon after that storefront decided to digitally release the first games in the legendary space combat game series set in the Star Wars universe.

The project is not ‘done’ done. It will never be truly done, since we will always think of new features and improvements, and keep on expanding the list of supported games.

But XWVM has reached a critical point where the support for the first game in the series, X-wing, has achieved virtually complete playability, and the few missing features suffer from diminishing returns, or aren’t as important to justify delaying it any further.

So, what is XWVM in its current state?
How is it different from other beloved fan projects such as the X-wing Alliance Upgrade project (XWAU), the TIE Fighter Total Conversion (TFTC), Fate of the Galaxy (FotG), X-wing Revival, and others?

How is it different from running the original X-wing Special Edition directly from GOG or Steam, or with the help of DREAMM?

Well, you see, XWVM navigates the space that lies above the literal port of the original engine to modern hardware, but below the full on remake or reimagination.

XWVM is the recreation of the infrastructure that runs the original missions, campaigns and cutscenes, and 3D models from scratch, (atop of the Unity game engine). As such, you need to own the original game, because XWVM is just an app that contains no gameplay elements or game assets other than some stuff that we had to make to support some new features.

At the same time, XWVM aims to rework, refine, restore, or reimagine some components of the original to make the game more appropriate for contemporary times. We have added new ways to interact with the game, to look at the game, to listen to the game, and to customize the game.

As some of us like to say, XWVM is a facilitator program that allows you to play the original games not as it was, but as we remember it being.

Proud of this technological terror we have constructed
XWVM has more features than we could possibly include in this article before it becomes an unbearable list of bullet points. So, we will highlight just a few for now. (We will come back later with more posts going deeper into individual areas in XWVM)

Among the most obvious ones are the higher video resolutions, monitor aspect ratios, and display quality options. You will be able to select whichever settings your monitor allows, and your graphic card can stand before melting.

You will be able to use whichever DirectInput or XInput controllers, joysticks and HOTAS you want, and bind tens of different actions to buttons and axes in your hardware.

Plus, we have improved in-flight mouse control by allowing the player to use a bind that will assist with rotating the ships towards the relevant direction. This will prevent the worst disadvantage of mouse control (to make big turns) while retaining its inherent precision for sniping faraway targets.

Users of controllers and other devices with limited buttons available can also make use of the radial menu system to control game functions.

But that is not all in regards to control. Players can use their VR headsets or Track IR/OpenTrack to look around. Some elements in the cockpits are interactable with VR pointers, or by unlocking a mouse pointer.

Then there is the music. You’ll be able to listen to the original dynamic iMuse in its classic MIDI synthesis, even selecting your favorite custom sound font if you wish.If you preferred the CD tracks from the Windows editions, we have you covered, too. Just install the Windows Collector Series/Remastered edition and you’ll have them.

But if what you want is dynamic music that responds to the game state, but that doesn’t sound so much like MIDI, we have also something for you, since the great Laserschwert created a remastered digital rendition of the iMuse tracks!

Oh… It’s beautiful…
Certainly, many talented people in the XWVM team have created pretty nice things for players to enjoy. These new assets are completely optional, and will be available as an independent download called “XWVM HD Asset Pack”.

This pack will include the aforementioned remastered digital music, but also new 3D models for most of the ships and space objects involved in the game.

All of the Rebel fighters got beautiful new models and detailed 3D interactable cockpits.

There are new models for the trooper transport, the Lambda-class shuttle, the space tug, the mighty Imperial Star Destroyer, the charismatic Calamari cruiser, the iconic Corellian corvette, the classic Bulk Freighter and the Class A container, as well as all other space objects such as mines, probes, satellites, torpedoes, missiles, etc.

In addition to that, the team has also created 3D planets to replace the 2D backdrops, which gives a much better context to the space battles and makes them feel closer to those seen in the movies and shows. This includes a full recreation in 3D of the Death Star, even.

The concourse of the Independence, that serves as the game menu between missions, has also been recreated in 3D, with some rooms being closer to a final stage, such as the Tech Room, the Registration Room, and new surprises such as the Astromech Workshop.

There is more! Did you think that missions felt so much more cinematic and involved in TIE Fighter and later games in the series thanks to the events and dialogue between the pilots of other ships during flight? We have thought about that, and we include text dialogue for all missions that comprise the 5 campaigns in the game, plus the historical missions!

Calibrate your Enthusiasm
As mentioned, the HD Asset Pack will be an independent download, and the core XWVM download will display a much more barren interface when launched as standalone. Without the HD pack, you will be able to choose between the flat shaded 3D models from the floppy edition, the Gouraud-shaded 3D models from the Collector’s CD-ROM edition, or the textured 3D models from the Windows/Collector Series/Remastered edition (those models were backported from X-wing vs. TIE Fighter) when playing the relevant game version.

Unfortunately, XWVM still has some areas with temporary placeholders, or is missing some features. Among the missing features is the 2D concourse, both from the DOS and Windows/Mac editions of the game. Instead, we have some placeholder menus that act as stand-ins for the missing rooms, since the recreated 3D rooms are part of the HD asset pack.

The other big missing feature is 2D cockpits. Due to technical reasons, we struggled to make these work with the new resolutions, aspect ratios, and VR/TrackIR interaction. So, for the moment, they are missing and you will get instead a virtual cockpit like that in X-wing Alliance.

There are some other, lower priority components that are still unimplemented, such as the Film Room and the ability to record replays.

Finally, support for TIE Figher is still under development and has been removed from the first public release. We apologize for that inconvenience and look forward to release a more stable support for TIE Fighter in the upcoming months!

Thesis, please
The TL;DR here is to announce that yes, XWVM is releasing soon. No, imminently!

But it will come in two parts:

The XWVM Core download. A completely playable reimplementation of the game engine that allows you to play your X-wing games in higher resolutions, with modern hardware and some other perks. This download contains no game assets whatsoever, nor any content that is trademarked, and all it does is interact with the assets from the game you own and make them run nicer.

The XWVM HD Asset Pack mod. An optional, independent download that provides HD 3D reimaginations of the original assets, as well as digital music based on the original iMuse soundtrack. This is a collection of completely original assets made by fans for fans, based on trademarks by Lucasfilm Ltd.

The In-Flight Mission Dialogue mod. An optional, independent download that provides in-flight mission dialogue for all Tour of Duty missions and all Historical missions.

Both downloads are, of course, absolutely free.

We look forward to finally sharing with the community that so patiently has awaited all these years. And we promise that we are not done with XWVM, at all. This is just the beginning. This is when the fun begins.
